The goal of the PEGASOS project is to assess seismic hazards for critical infrastructure in Switzerland taking basis in the SSHAC Level 4 approach, which is the state-of-the-art approach for Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analysis (PSHA). The special feature of this approach is to incorporate epistemic uncertainties – i.e. to explicitly consider the uncertainties associated with our understanding on seismic hazards in Switzerland – in probabilistic analysis.

One of the technical challenges therein is the way on how the epistemic uncertainties can be consistently taken into account. This is by all means not an easy task especially in the type of problem where a number of experts responsible for different parts of the phenomena are involved and all the outcomes from the experts must be integrated; this is one of the main issues in the PEGASOS refinement project, which presently is undergoing.

Matrisk – as an expert on the treatment of uncertainties – is responsible for controlling the consistency of the treatment of uncertainties, whereby providing advices facilitating the consistent seismic hazard assessment in the project.
