Best practice methodology for risk assessment of roadway tunnels

The objective of the present project is to develop a "best practice" methodology and the corresponding software tool for the risk assesment of roadway tunnels in Switzerland and Norway. The methodology takes basis in the current state of the art in the fields of risk-based decision making and traffic engineering - especially, modeling of accident frequency and the consequences in roadway tunnels. The methodology is indicator-based, easy to apply, and supports typical safety-related decisions at different stages of life-time of roadway tunnels; from planning, operation over maintenance to renewal. The developed software tool runs on Microsoft-Excel©, which is fast and easy to use.
Whereas the methodology is originally developed for roadway tunnels in the abovementioned countries, the developed methodology is general; i.e., it is readily applicable to the risk assessment of tunnels in the European road networks. The main outcomes from the present project are summarized and available as a research report; it contains the user manual, the complete and transparent documentation, and several examples.
